Syncope  (n.)

A term used in COMPARATIVE PHILOLOGY, and sometimes in modern PHONOLOGY, to refer to the DELETION of a VOWEL within a WORD; often contrasted with APHAERESIS and APOCOPE. Examples include the modern British English pronunciations of such words as secretary  , where American English has  . Some authors extend the notion to include internal CONSONANT deletion.
