language awareness
A term used especially in EDUCATIONAL LINGUISTICS, to refer to an informed, sensitive and critical response to the use of language by oneself and others, including the awareness of relevant terminology (metalinguistic awareness). A particular impetus was given to the task of promoting linguistic awareness in the early 1990s, when new perspectives on language teaching in schools came to be adopted in several countries.
