Agencies with statutory duties

The Education Welfare Service works within a statutory and non-statutory frame work and it is essential that good relationships and effective working practices are built up and maintained between a school and its Education Welfare Officer (EWO). There are also times when schools need to work collaboratively with the police force or the probation service to meet a pupil’s needs. This can be very complex, but if a good understanding of the roles and the structures of the different professions are respected within an inter-agency approach and the main purpose, support for the pupil, is focused upon, effective and positive outcomes for the pupil and the services can be achieved.
