Vowels FLEECE
Early descriptions of Philadelphia speech indicate lowered and/or laxed variants of FLEECE were common. The recent sociolinguistic evidence indicates a reversal of this trend such that the vowel is now commonly raised and fronted. This raising is heard primarily in “checked” contexts; i.e., when the vowel is followed by a consonant (e.g., eat).
