bow-wow theory
The name of one of the speculative theories about the origins of LANGUAGE: it argues that SPEECH arose through people imitating the sounds of the environment, especially animal calls. The main evidence is the use of onomatopoeic words (which are few, in most languages). The term has no standing in contemporary LINGUISTICS.
