What is Quantitative Adjectives?

Quantitative adjectives describes the quantity of something. Adjectives of quantity indicates the amount or estimated amount of the noun or pronoun in a sentence. It tells the amount of noun only in relative whole terms. It does not provide information about exact numbers.

Adjectives are used to characterize noun to differentiate it from other nouns or are used to define nouns. It indicated ‘how much’ noun is there in the sentence.

So, many, very, enough, more, much, etc are some of the words which describe Adjectives of quantity.

When there is no requirement of donating the exact number of noun such as number of rice grains, number of hair, number of pulses in a packet, we use Adjectives of Quantity. Sometimes some of the indefinite numeral adjectives are considered as Adjectives of Quantity. For example: She has brought some sweets.

We should use all the adjectives according to the availability and requirement of the noun and pronoun description in the sentence.

Types of Quantitative Adjectives

Quantitative adjectives are further classified into three categories:

-1Definite numeral Adjectives:

These adjectives are used to denote exact numbers. These are further divided into two categories. They are: Cardinals and Ordinals.

Cardinals comprises of 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. And ordinals comprises of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.

For example: The number printed on Virat Kohli’s T-shirt is 9, I came 2nd in class.

2-Indefinite Numeral Adjectives:

It do not denote exact numbers.

-1All: All is an Indefinite Numeral Adjectives because it did not donate how many things were there.

For example: All the girls are beautiful.

-2Any: It is used to refer one or some of the things, no matter how much or how many. So it is a Indefinite Numeral Adjectives.

For example: Any one can dance.

-3Some: It does not specify a particular number. Hence, it is a Indefinite Numeral Adjectives.

For example: Some people are very immature.

-4Few: It doesn’t tell exact number. Few means a ‘small amount’ or ‘number of’.

For example: These days few people are trustworthy.

-5Several: It means more than some but not many. It is an Indefinite noun as well. It does not tell exact number.

For example: Several people have social media account on Instagram.

-6Many: It does not tell exact numbers. Many refers to a large quantity or number of. It is an Indefinite noun.

For Example: Many of us are Inhuman.

3. Distributive Numeral Adjectives:

It includes each, either, every, neither.

1.Each: Each of you are required to fill the details.

It defines each person present there.

2. Either: Either is one or the other of two people or things. It does not specify numbers, hence, it is a Distributive Numeral Adjective.

For example: Either you study yourself or I’ll teach you.

-3Every: every is a singular noun. It is used to refer to all the individual in a set without exception.

For example: Every one wants a second chance.

4. Neither: It means not the one nor the other things. In other words, None of the two things.

For example: Neither of the two shoe fits me.
