Vowels DANCE
Raised allophones, 
or higher, are common for /æ/ before nasal consonants across much of the western US. The phonemic split of tense and lax /æ/ found in Middle Atlantic dialects such as Philadelphia and New York does not occur in the regions described here, though a similar phenomenon is heard in Cincinnati as discussed below.
