Vowels and diphthongs STRUT

There is some uncertainty about the phonetic quality of the STRUT vowel in South-western accents. Wakelin (1986: 23) cites [ə] and  for Bristol,  in words such as dozen and brother in some accents of Devon and Cornwall, a range of rounded variants including  and [Y:] in certain areas, and even some diphthongal pronunciations such as  and [œY] in dust and sludge.
