Sound system Vowels TRAP

For the current speaker, [æ] is lowered to a position approaching [a]. According to Turner, [a] is practically cardinal in Gullah and is used instead of [æ] or [a], which Turner describes as the General American (GA) pronunciation, henceforth referred to by the label Standard American English (StAmE). Given the current speaker’s pronunciation, however, it appears that [æ] has since been added to the Gullah phonology, but in a more lowered position than that typically found in StAmE phonologies.
