merge (n.)

In the MINIMALIST PROGRAMME, an operation which forms larger units out of those already constructed. Specifically, merge is a RECURSIVE process which combines two LEXICAL items, or one lexical item and a construction. In later minimalist thinking, the operation MOVE is regarded as a subtype of merge, leading to a terminological reformulation: ‘move’ is called internal merge and ‘merge’ is called external merge.
