factitive (adj./n.)

A term used in GRAMMATICAL description to refer to a CONSTRUCTION or FORM (usually a VERB) denoting an action in which a cause produces a result: e.g. make, choose, elect could be called ‘factitive verbs’ (or ‘factitives’). In early CASE grammar, the term has special status, where it refers to the SEMANTIC case of the entity resulting from the verb’s action, or understood as part of the verb’s meaning, and is contrasted with AGENTIVE, DATIVE, etc. (compare the later use of RESULT, in this theory).
