A principle of LINGUISTIC analysis whereby the aim is to specify totally the linguistic CONTRASTS in a set of DATA, and ultimately in the LANGUAGE as a whole. It is often cited as one of three scientific principles to be adhered to in linguistics, the others being logical self-consistency and ECONOMY.
