defining vocabulary
In several areas of APPLIED LINGUISTICS, a fixed set of words used as part of the definition of other words. The notion is found in such contexts as foreign-language teaching, the teaching of reading, and LEXICOGRAPHY.
These days, several dictionaries intended for the non-native user have a limited vocabulary – for example, 2,000 words – in order to define the meanings of all their lexical entries.
