Partially voiced plosives

If preceded by a voiced sound, the sounds [b d g] in English are generally partially voiced: voicing continues during the early part of the closure but then ceases part way through the hold phase. On release, voicing starts again almost immediately.

An example of this is shown in Figure 7.5, which contains [b] between two vowels. Voicing stops half way through the hold phase, and starts again immediately after the release of the closure.

Utterance-final [b d g] are often partially voiced, and have no voicing, or whispery voice, on release; this can be transcribed as .
