consists of a number of coils of insulated wire wound upon a core which has the form of a ring. Figure 1 shows a simple form of ring armature. By applying the rule for direction of induction, we may determine the brush with which the + terminal is connected. Since one half of the whole number of coils is in series between the brushes on each side, it is evident that the E. M. F. will be the sum of the E. M. F.'s induced in all the coils on either side. The resistance of the armature will be one fourth of the resistance of all the wire upon it, since there are two parallel circuits from the + to the - brush, each having half the wire upon the armature. This form of armature is adapted to machines designed for high voltage, such as those used in arc lighting.
