Lenz's Law A person can turn the armature of a 50-H.-P. dynamo with one hand so long as there is no current generated and nothing to overcome but the friction; but when the dynamo is being run at full speed and the current is being used, the work of an engine is needed to turn it; the increase is the work that is required to force the conductors, while they are carrying a current, through the invisible lines of magnetic force. This is in accordance with Lenz's law, which can be stated thus: Whenever a current is induced in a conductor by passing it through a field of force, the direction of the induced current is such that the lines of force generated by it around the conductor will oppose the motion that induces the current.
