The part of the dynamo in which the electromotive force is induced is called the armature. This is generally a rotating part, but in certain types of machines it is stationary, in which case the magnetic field rotates.

The core of the armature is made of soft iron in order to increase the number of lines of force by reducing the reluctance in the magnetic circuit. Reluctance in a magnetic circuit corresponds to resistance in an electrical circuit, except that there is no substance through which the lines of force will not pass. In most armatures the conductors lie in slots cut into the surface of the core parallel to the axis.
