It was narrated from Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) that he said: “Let your son play for seven years, discipline him for seven years, and befriend for seven years.”
Through this hadith, and specifically through Imam al-Sadiq’s (peace be upon him) advice to every father with the phrase “befriend him,” the importance of respecting and appreciating the boy becomes clear. Fathers and mothers rule their children before puberty, but duty calls upon them to respect their children from the age of fifteen and to get close to them and befriend them.
From the Islamic perspective, respecting and appreciating the boy are considered among the duties imposed on parents and all members of society. Appreciating the boy in all aspects of life: moral, social, economic, psychological, and educational, has a positive impact.
The boy who is appreciated by his parents, the boy who participates in settling family problems and whose opinion is taken into account and whose position is acted upon, the boy who is treated by his father as if he were a close friend who has complete respect and appreciation for him, and the boy who feels among his family and his community that he has a personality is respected like adults, all these models of young men are keen to avoid falling into vice, and they strive to be worthy of this respect and appreciation, so they monitor their actions and behavior and avoid everything that might distort their personality. The Commander of the Faithful Ali (peace be upon him) said: (Whoever honors his soul, his desires become insignificant to him).
It was narrated from him (peace be upon him) that he said: (Whoever honors his soul, does not humiliate it with disobedience).
