Teach your children how to stand up for themselves

I am not advocating that you tell your child to punch anyone who offends him. Aggression and bullying are part of human nature, and it happens in all schools (although some handle it better than others), so you need to be prepared for it. We have agreed that if your child is being abused, you need to do something about it. I am here talking about the basic rules and I do not have the space of the entire book to talk about dealing with aggression and bullying, but perhaps those short rules are all you want.

So what is this rule talking about? If your child is facing - or will face - aggression, the most important thing you can teach him is to deal with the situation before it escalates. Do you know why children are exposed to aggression? There are many reasons. Researchers have found that 75% of children are teased and ridiculed because of their appearance. Rather, one out of every five children injures himself, skips school, or feigns illness to avoid going to school and being attacked and aggressive. It's scary numbers, right?

The two basic approaches to dealing with aggression are extremes; One of the two methods invites you to tell your child that he must respond to aggression in kind. Well, although this method may work sometimes, most of the time it will only exacerbate the problem. The other advice given in this regard is to completely ignore the aggression and it will stop on its own. Such advice may be given by a father to his son because he hopes it is correct, but it is not. Rather, all evidence points to the opposite.

So what is the solution? The best thing your child can hear is to appear confident, make eye contact and distract the abuser by changing the subject. Of course, this method will not work in all situations, but if your child has confidence and strength of character and cares about his appearance, then he has gone half way towards getting rid of the problem of aggression in the first place; And you can provide him with these qualities before he faces the first situation of aggression against him.

I am not saying that it is your fault, or your children's fault, that they are being attacked. It is not your child's fault that he wears glasses or suffers from a disability, but I know children who wear glasses and suffer from disabilities or physical deformities, yet they are not subjected to ridicule and aggression. It is about not giving other children the opportunity to continue bullying your child. Of course, giving your child a strange haircut once in a while he may not notice, but doing strange, unfamiliar haircuts all the time will make others laugh at him. When I was in school I had a classmate they called Stinky Denton, and I don't even know his full name, but I remember his smell, which is why everyone called him that.

You can help prevent your child from being bullied and aggressive by encouraging him to be:

• self-confident and balanced personality.

• He does not suffer from weight gain.

• Good appearance (clean, well-groomed, clean nails, well-coiffed hair, etc.).

This is a good start, and if you can also convince your child of the importance of making good eye contact and not showing fear, then you will know that you have done something really important to protect your child before they run into any problems.

It is not your fault, or your children's fault if they are attacked.
