Expectations that half of the world's population will be affected by mental disorders
Scientists from the Australian University of Queensland and Harvard Medical School predict that half of the world's population will suffer from mental disorders in their lifetime.
The Lancet Psychiatry magazine indicates that researchers analyzed data of more than 150,000 adults who participated in the World Mental Health survey during the years 2001-2022 in 29 countries, including 12 low- and middle-income countries and 17 high-income countries.
It became clear to the researchers that the most prevalent disorders are anxiety and depression. And that some mental disorders are linked to sex. For example, depression was more prevalent among women, a specific phobia that led to a significant decrease in the standard of living, and post-traumatic stress. As for the most common among men, depression was a specific phobia along with alcohol abuse.
The researchers discovered that the probability of the first mental illness appearing at the age of 15 years, and that the average age at which this disease appears is 19 years for men and 20 years for women. At the age of 75, half of the world's population will suffer from one or more mental disorders. These disorders usually appear for the first time in childhood, adolescence or young adulthood.
