If your son comes to you to tell you about what happened with him at school, do not dismiss what he says, turn off the radio or television, and pay attention to what he says.
For him, his conversation with you at that moment is more important than all your thoughts.. He wants to tell you about his feelings, or about the pain he experiences at school. He may even want to express to you his happiness and joy about the certificate of appreciation he received for that.
Give him your attention if he tells you that he got a perfect score that day in the subject exam (such and such).. Encourage him to do more, instead of making him feel indifferent to that, and not interested in what he says...
And if your young son comes to you one day and tells you what happened at school: (someone hit me at school).
And you answered him: (Are you sure that you were not the initiator of the beating or insulting him?), by doing so you have closed the door to dialogue with your son, as you, in the eyes of your son, turn from a friend to whom he turns to an interrogator or judge who possesses reward and punishment.
Rather, your son may consider you an unjust investigator, because you are looking for the accusation of the victim and insist on discovering the innocence of his attacker.
If the son speaks first to his parents, then the parents should show attention, and the dialogue should continue, and any tendency to criticize or be indifferent to what the son says should be resisted.
