Among the other factors that play an influential role in building the child's personality, and this role appears positively or negatively during the stages of puberty and youth, is the economic and financial situation of the family.
The father whose income equals the family’s expenses, and manages his family in a way that preserves his reputation and dignity in front of society, is considered to be from the middle class. And the child in such a family is psychologically normal, because he can satisfy his inclinations and desires in the required manner, and therefore he will become a good and suitable personality if he does not encounter other obstacles. Our imams (peace be upon them) considered subsistence living in terms of income and spending as the best way of living and as one of the pillars of happiness.
It was narrated on the authority of the scholar (Imam Musa bin Jaafar), peace be upon him, that he said: Blessed are those who believed and whose livelihood was subsistence.
The impact of the economic situation on the personality:
(The financial and social situation of the family is reflected directly or indirectly on the growth and integration of the child's personality. A child who has all the means of life and whose inclinations are well satisfied rarely encounters difficulties in his life, and this is what helps the development of his personality well. As for the child who is Deprived of this blessing, always feels in his heart his inferiority and despicableness).
As for the parents, whose income does not match their daily expenses, and they are unable to fulfill the requirements of their families for the necessary necessities of life, they are considered from the poor class of society. The child in a poor family often suffers from deficiency and deprivation, and feels in his depths of backwardness. Undoubtedly, the bitterness of this feeling reflects negatively on building his personality, and constitutes many obstacles on the way to harmony with society.
Mistrust and confusion:
“Destitution has a negative impact on our personality, as it generates anxiety, grief and depression, and a person who is unable to secure the needs of his family in terms of food, drink, clothing and shelter, will always be anxious, confused, bewildered, mistrusting others and taking revenge on them.”
This is the case for everyone who suffers from poverty and destitution, and this suffering undoubtedly reflects negatively on the characteristics and character of man, so that we cannot expect from him a beautiful manner, sacrifice, fulfillment of the covenant, and other good qualities.
“The destitute poor, who feels his weakness and lowliness in front of others, always suffers from weakness, anxiety and fear, which causes him to lose a lot of his preparations, activity and good manners.
“The National Cooperation Association for University Students announced in a pamphlet issued by it that one thousand out of one hundred thousand university students suffer from mental illnesses. They are in a state of constant waiting for money that they receive from their families or checks that come to them from their families, in which they believe in their inescapable needs, and this is what makes them, despite their culture; lag behind those whose pockets are filled with money in terms of intellectual development. Today’s youth see money as a symbol of independence.”
