Homelessness is evolving into a national and international crisis. According to a study conducted by Yale University, 20% of the citizens within developed countries lach proper housing, while homeless rates are now believed to approximate 2% of most urban populations.
Before diving into the solutions of ending homelessness, let’s first see the reasons behind it.
What is homelessness caused by?
All these factors can cause a person to become homeless. They can also be one of the reasons why a person remains homeless.
Who are the Homeless?
More than half of all the homeless people counted in the United States report suffering from a physical or psychological problem that make it especially difficult to get indoors for good. 17% are chronically homeless, 20% are severely mentally ill, 20% - chronic substance, 9% are verterans, 2% have HIV/AIDS and 10% are victims of domestic violence.
Now comes the important part: how do we end it?
1. Housing.
Because homelessness is fundamentally defined by lack of housing, housing is the essential foundation to ending homelessness.
Now the best solution would be to provide affordable housing
Housing is a basic human right, which without, people cannot lead stable, connected lives.
2. Services.
Housing is essential, but it is not sufficient. Housing alone, without attention to health, behavioral health, employment and education, and other supports, will continue to result in instability and recurrent homelessness for many people.
We must find a way to ensure that services are available, accessible, and affordable for all.
3. Social Connectedness.
Bring together the homeless and integrating them with society is another very essential factor to ending homelessness. Loneliness is a huge issue for them that leads to depression or even suicide.
4. Programs for the Homeless.
Our society sadly lacks special programs for the homeless. These programs would educate, train and develop the homeless. Why not have a course to teach them arts and crafts or just a gathering for to sit and share their experiences to learn from one another.
Interestingly, many of famous celebrates that people admire and look up to were also homeless before their fame and they managed to leave that state. They made the right choices and got out of homelessness to make a name of themselves.
