MEANING POSTULATE
A device in formal semantics which aims to capture relations between the meanings of words by representing their arguments. An example for BUY and SELL is:
Two words are defined as synonymous if they have identical meaning postulates, a single word form as homonymous if more than one set of postulates is associated with it. Meaning postulates are said to be stored in long-term memory and retrieved in order to deal with issues of synonymy, ambiguity or entailment. The weakness of the postulates view is that it accounts for within-language relations but not for relations between language and the real world.
