IMMEDIACYOF INTERPRETATION
The view that a reader attempts to interpret each word in a text immediately it is encountered rather than using a ‘wait-and-see’ strategy. An associated eye-mind hypothesis asserts that this interpretation takes place at the moment the reader’s eye fixates the word. There is thus minimal delay between what is fixated and what becomes available for cognitive processing. Evidence supporting this position indicates that the time taken to identify a word is strongly influenced by the characteristics of the word such as its length, but not by those of the preceding word. There are two benefits to immediate interpretation: it reduces memory load and it enables the reader to detect misperceptions at the time they occur.
