Backbiting is mentioning a person's disliked faults in his absence by word, gesture, or imitation. It is a behavior that Islam has forbidden. Backbiting has serious social harms, including:
- If the scope of backbiting in society expanded, we would lose the greatest social values represented by the spirit of brotherhood, unity, and sincerity, and the foundations of good faith and general trust, which are considered the first condition for creating a spirit of social cooperation, would be shaken.
- Backbiting often causes the ignition of the fire of discord and the expansion of enmity and hatred between individuals; Because the faults of some may be related to the rights of others or become a spear in the hands of the wicked for revenge and the destruction of the chivalry of some, which leads to the creation of disputes or their intensification.
- Backbiting crushes the personality of the individual and diminishes him in the eyes of people, and with the broken personality of these individuals and the violation of their sanctity, their caution from sins decreases; because many people avoid ugly actions to preserve their face and social status.
- Backbiting has economic and social damages that cannot be compensated; It leads to a reduction in the level of mutual trust between people, and without it the effectiveness of material wealth will weaken and tend towards stagnation or depression.
