Scientists of the Kurchatov Institute in cooperation with the Petersburg Institute of Nuclear Physics and Orenburg Medical University have devised a method to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Scientists have been able to synthesize an antimicrobial molecular compound that will help create disinfectant materials for complex and sensitive materials. This compound could also become an alternative basis for antibiotics in the future. Moreover, it contains diamond nanoparticles that shine, which may make this compound a basis for creating methods for treating cancerous tumors using light therapy.
This method depends on the properties of materials that activate when exposed to light. The scientists used fullerenes, which are complex spherical carbon molecules about nanometers in size. These tiny "balls" penetrate the cell and convert visible light into energy, catalyzing reactive oxygen species and oxidizing the cell's internal environment. As a result, pathogenic microorganisms die.
“The search for new antimicrobial agents has become an urgent task,” says Olga Bolshakova from the Department of Molecular Biophysics at the Kurchatov Institute. “This is related to the increasing resistance of bacteria to currently used drugs. Fullerenes could become an effective means of countering microbial infections.”
