A new study shows that a smart relaxation ball designed to help “body” breathing can help significantly reduce anxiety. The shape-shifting ball is called a physical well-being support “paus,” and it was invented by computer scientist Alex Farrall of the University of Bath in the UK. .
As users inhale and exhale, the sphere expands and contracts, providing users with a tactile representation of their breathing to help focus their minds and regulate their emotions.
"By breathing physically, the ball promotes self-awareness and engagement, promotes positive mental health outcomes, provides a personal and engaging experience, and is accessible to all," Farrall said.
Breathing exercises have long been used to manage anxiety and promote good mental health, and are often used in therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy.
The team of scientists from the University of Bath demonstrated a 75% reduction in anxiety among participants, with a 56% increase in protection against anxious thoughts, according to a study published in the scientific journal Science Alert.
Another promising finding was that those who used the ball along with the meditation sound showed significantly higher heart rate variability, a measure that reflects better stress resilience and higher emotional regulation.
