Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is joining the Japan Aerospace Studies Agency's manned lunar module manufacturing project with Toyota Motor.
The project was called the "lunar cruiser", and the two Japanese institutions have been working on it for years.
The project provides for the manufacture of a six-wheeled lunar vehicle equipped with solar batteries, and the vehicle is devoted to walking on the surface of the moon and studying its terrain. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is responsible for survivability technologies and creating comfort conditions inside the manned lunar module.
The vehicle is expected to be 6 meters long, 5.2 meters wide and 3.8 meters high. It will have an interior area of 13 square meters, with two chairs for the astronauts. As for the electric battery carried by the vehicle, it will allow it to travel 1,000 km on the surface of the moon without charging its battery.
Honda Motor Company and tire manufacturer Bridgestone had previously joined the project.
It is expected that the lunar mission will be launched using the modern manned vehicle in 2029. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is also working on manufacturing the unmanned lunar rover, which can be launched to the moon in 2025, to collect information in preparation for the realization of the "lunar cruiser" project.
