Dealing with real friendships
7:59:15 2023-04-01 1297

Technology has occupied our entire lives, and our children cannot imagine the era when the average home was devoid of microwaves, computers, mobile phones, and video games. And while many of these devices can help us stay in touch with our friends, they put us off the path of creating "real" friendships when we spend more time emailing our friends than spending time with them. We also use technology as a substitute for dialogue, we would rather go to the movies than talk to someone, or play computer games with our friends instead of sitting with them and getting to know them, and how many children end the conversation by immersing themselves in their games and devices?

While there is insufficient data on technology use and its relationship to shy children, I suspect that they are drawn to technology because it helps them overcome their restrictiveness with other children. Unfortunately, while they may keep in touch with their friends via computers, they may lack real conversational skills, or they may prefer to email their friends rather than see them face-to-face and be embarrassed and speak in broken phrases. They may also prefer to go to technology outlets when they are with their friends because they will not have to talk when they are there.

To help your child become less dependent on technology, follow these tips:

Reduce your child's computer or phone time: Set time limits for your child to sit in front of the computer, play video games, and make phone calls so that your child is aware of the time he spends on all these activities.

Balance electronic communication friends with real friends: Emails will not replace real conversations, and a shy child who resists seeing his friends face to face will develop bad social habits.

Monitor your child's computer use Whether you like it or not, kids often watch everything they can watch online while you're away. Make sure that your child does not slip into the danger zone and come into contact with inappropriate strangers.

Insist that your child meets his online friends: If the friendship is made online, make sure they meet in real life - in a safe environment. Arrange a time to meet in a public place and be with your child for safety.

Finally, make sure that the benefits of technology outweigh the number of problems it creates. And your child must acquire real social skills because he will live his life in the real world, so do not allow him to use technology as an aid when he wants to communicate with others.
