The diphthongs

This is usually realized as diphthongal [ʊə] in Cultivated and General; but there is a growing trend, especially when the vowel does not occur after /j/ (sure), in General toward Broad’s monophthongal [o:], perhaps slightly lower than THOUGHT. This probably accounts for the spelling of you’re as your in everything from student essays to newspaper advertisements.
