numeration (n.)
In the MINIMALIST PROGRAMME, the set of items taken from the LEXICON for the purpose of building a STRUCTURAL DESCRIPTION. The COMPUTATIONAL SYSTEM selects elements from the numeration and combines them into structures. Numeration defines a reference set. The most economical DERIVATION is chosen over the others, but a derivation that results from one numeration does not compete against a derivation chosen from a different numeration. In more recent minimalist thinking, numeration has been replaced by the concept of LEXICAL ARRAY.
