The Poles of a Cell. - The apparatus just described constitutes a voltaic cell, or galvanic cell. The terminals of the plates to which the conductor is attached are called the poles of the cell, the zinc being the negative and the copper the positive pole. When the poles are joined by a conductor, the cell is on a closed circuit; when they are not, it is on an open circuit.
