The many more or less complicated machines in common use may be reduced in principle to but six: the lever, pulley, wheel and axle, inclined plane, wedge, and screw. These are called the mechanical powers or simple machines. These six simple machines may be still further reduced to two, the lever and the inclined plane, as it can easily be shown that the pulley and the wheel and axle are only modified levers, while the screw and the wedge are modified inclined planes.
