Ways to Guard Against Anger

Absolute control over anger is possible through strengthening one’s willpower. Strengthening the will is also achieved through faith and religious commitment. Several methods have been mentioned to control anger, extinguish its fire, and prevent its flames from spreading to dangerous places. If a person follows these methods, they can avoid the unfortunate consequences of anger and preserve a space for rational thinking, drawing support from reason and faith. Here are some of these methods:

First: Changing Activity and Resting:
When a person begins to feel an abnormal state that might lead to sudden anger, they should immediately occupy themselves with another activity to divert their mind from what might provoke anger. One can guard against it by engaging in physical activities such as walking. If standing, they should sit down, and by doing so, they rest and give their body a more relaxed state.

Second: Cold Water and Anger:
Cold water calms inflammation and bodily agitation. It reduces rapid blood circulation and continuous heart palpitations. The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) referred to these two ways in a beautiful hadith, saying:
“Anger is a burning coal in the heart. Have you not seen how the veins in the neck swell and the eyes turn red? So, if any of you feels something of that, let him sit if he was standing, and lie down if he was sitting. If it still persists, let him perform ablution with cold water and wash himself, for nothing extinguishes fire but water.”

Third: Forgetting the Incident of Anger:
Trying to forget the incident that caused the anger also helps extinguish its fire. For example, if an argument occurred between you and someone else, and it led to a quarrel, the memory of those moments may repeatedly come to mind, causing ongoing agitation. If we try not to think about the incident—and eventually forget it—we can say we have also forgotten our anger and returned to a state of calm.

Fourth: Remembering Allah:
The fourth way, which more than any other can bring peace and tranquility to the soul and curb the tyranny of anger, is remembering Allah, the Most Merciful, and strengthening one’s spiritual connection with Him. Allah revealed to some of His prophets:
“O son of Adam, remember Me when you are angry, and I will remember you when I am angry.”
