Why your cough symptoms get worse at night
10:6:39 2023-11-23 1373

A group of experts revealed the reason for the increased feeling of colds and coughing during the night, and they provided some advice to prevent increased coughing during sleep, explaining that the reason for this may be due to lying down, and the interaction of the immune system and resistance to the virus are among the most important factors causing the increase in coughing, stressing the importance of drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day to relieve symptoms and get rid of mucus, according to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”.

The newspaper said that many people notice that colds, muscle pain, and sore throat are much worse during the night, and experts revealed that there are several reasons behind this, such as the body’s circadian rhythm, where almost every bodily function is programmed to operate at full capacity at certain times of the day, and to calm down at other times, For example, when the sun goes down and the body senses that it is time to sleep, the brain secretes fewer stress hormones such as cortisol, and tells the intestines to slow down digestive processes, but some immune cells become more active. These cells are designed to hunt down and destroy pathogens such as viruses. This fight leads to nocturnal coughing attacks.

Dr. Diego Higano, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, told the New York Times that immune cells can cause irritation and inflammation, ultimately making respiratory symptoms worse at night.

Experts also highlighted another important factor where cough and cold symptoms are worse when lying down. This is because mucus begins to collect at the back of the throat, a problem doctors call postnasal drip.

"Throughout the day, mucus buildup isn't a big problem because gravity helps drain it when you're upright and moving," said Dr. Juan Chiriboga Hurtado, a family medicine specialist at Keck Medicine at the University of Southern California.

Experts recommend simple things, the most important of which are...

1. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day to thin out the mucus, and use a saline nasal spray to remove some of the sticky liquid.

2. Use menthol-flavored cough lozenges — or throat sprays — to provide a cooling sensation in the throat and help with the annoying tickle
