Discovery of a promising treatment to stop migraine pain

Blowing air into the nose can relieve migraine pain in just 15 minutes.

This technique works by cooling the nerves at the back of the nose that are responsible for causing severe headaches.

Results of a small trial, presented at the American Headache Society annual meeting in Austin, Texas, in June, showed that nearly half of those treated with air were free of pain afterwards.

Most people with migraines rely on pain relievers or prescription drugs called triptans, which can shorten the duration of attacks.

And a new class of drugs, called CGRP inhibitors, can prevent attacks in the first place.

It is given as an injection into the stomach, arms or legs, but is very expensive (costing several thousand pounds a year) and strictly limited to those who suffer from severe migraines at least once or twice a week.

The new treatment targets a bundle of nerves behind the nose called the sphenoid ganglion, or SPG.

The SPG is connected to the trigeminal nerve, which provides sensation to the face: when the trigeminal nerve is over-stimulated by stimuli such as hormonal changes, alcohol, caffeine or stress, this activates the migraine.

The SPG is responsible for sending pain signals to the nervous system and brain. In very severe cases, doctors sometimes inject an anesthetic through the nose into the SPG's nerves to numb them so they can no longer send pain messages (a procedure called an SPG block).

But the pain relief may only last a few weeks, and the injection can cause nosebleeds, light-headedness, and a numb sensation in the back of the throat. The latest technology could be a simpler alternative.
