Are we producers or consumers?
What are the limits of production, and what are the limits of consumption?
Which one is given over the other?
There are people who are content with being consumers of what others produce, and there are those who are content only to be more producers than consumers, and there is a third type that is neither a producer nor a consumer. This is the dead of the living.
It is true that Allah Almighty created us from the wombs of our mothers, not knowing anything. It is also true that the one who wants to produce must go through the stages of consumption, but Allah has provided man with a sound mind, endowed him with hearing, sight, and opened before him horizons of ambition, development, advancement, and prosperity. With these divine gifts, every person can move up the ladder of Knowledge.
Some may think that the issue of production and consumption pertains to economic issues alone, but the matter goes beyond that and includes all aspects of life. On the cultural side, there are those who produce culture, either by thinking, authoring, or writing, and there are those who consume that culture, as they read what others write, but they do not produce or think about production. On the literary side, you find those who produce and those who consume. For example, some critics are always waiting for another person to produce a poem in order to criticize it, but they do not think, not even once, that he himself will make poetry, even composing one poem.
As in composition, so in rhetoric, whoever wants to be a preacher must first imitate good preachers, but after practice and proficiency, he must be independent in his style - that is, take what others have built, and then build on it - not seek shade. Under the building of others forever, and repeats the production of others and repeats it like a parrot, without adding things to it.
In other words, the successful in life is the one who consumes the best of what they have from others, in order to produce something better.
