According to a report published by The Sun, a recent study revealed the extent of the damage caused by this sitting position and its negative impact on the bones.
Dr. Brendon Talbot, a Canadian orthopedic expert, warned that placing one leg on another while sitting should be avoided because it could put pressure on a major drainage area in the lower extremities, explaining that all blood from the lower extremities drains into the femoral vein, which travels under the inguinal ligament "the thigh area." ".
The negative effects of cross-leggedness when sitting included circulatory problems, which ultimately contributes to venous diseases, including varicose veins.
Varicose veins occur when tiny valves inside the veins of the legs stop working properly, causing blood to pool in the veins, making them swollen and painful.
The study revealed that this sitting position leads to increased pressure in the veins as well, which makes the skin purple, dry and scaly, and if left untreated, complications such as bleeding, or chronic venous insufficiency and skin ulcers may occur.
The expert also explained that varicose veins are another reason that prevents people from placing one leg on the other, noting that this procedure disrupts the transmission of blood to the heart.
Warned not to cross one leg, Brendon advised regular exercise to keep the veins healthy.
He also advised avoiding sitting or standing for long periods, with the need to try to change sitting positions regularly throughout the day.
